Urban Marketplace 2009

Urban Marketplace: Upward Mobility -- spotlights $1.46 billion in transit, $857 million in HUD funding for shovel-ready projects

Organized annually by the Houston chapter of the Urban Land Institute, Urban Marketplace attracts hundreds of local real estate developers, planners, architects, and financiers for a day of networking, education and inspiration.  This year's Urban Marketplace theme is "Upward Mobility,” spotlighting transit-based development as well as opportunities created by federal stimulus programs.

Tom Murphy, three-term mayor of Pittsburgh and ULI senior fellow in urban development, will deliver the keynote address.  David Wolff, Chairman of Wolff Companies, is honorary Chair of the event, supported by Co-Chairs Laura Bailey, Managing Vice President of Capital One, and Stephan Fairfield, CEO of Covenant Community Capital.

Urban Marketplace will be held August 25th at the Hilton Americas.  MBACH members are encouraged to attend!  More information and registration are available at http://www.uli-houston.org/.

Introduction

This year's theme is "Upward Mobility." In part, the conference will focus on approximately $1.7 billion in new transit expansion and its potential to drive urban redevelopment. The conference will also spotlight opportunities funded by new stimulus spending, as well as best practices in urban, infill redevelopment. The half-day Urban Marketplace features a keynote luncheon, presentations, roundtables, a marketplace with exhibitors, and a cocktail reception.

The need for ULI Houston Urban Marketplace is clear: many developers and investors already recognize the opportunities for development in Houston's urban markets, and the financial incentives to boost new growth. However, most lack tools and partners to transform opportunities into realities. Similary, non-profits and others with expertise in urban development projects are seeking additional opportunities to capitalize on partnerships with "traditional" developers and funding sources. ULI Urban Marketplace brings together all parties interested in inner city development, with a focus on responsible land use and building a sustainable community.
